The new system is great if you don't use any session management at all, but
simply log out: applications can cancel the shutdown process after interacting
with the user.
Btw: current KDE2 restores a fair bit of legacy applications, for example
xterm. For emacs and XEmacs: it's free software, sombody simply has to add SM
support into it ( a matter of a few hours).
