cvs of yesterday evening; i get this:

[dep@localhost dep]$ artsd
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
[dep@localhost dep]$ ls -l /dev/dsp
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 14, 3 Feb 17 2000 /dev/dsp
[dep@localhost dep]$

am i missing something basic here? i haven't had sound since coming
over to kde2 last november, and since then i've gone from an ancient
soundblaster to a mb with the via codec, which is (supposedly)
supported. but it's been ages since i tried to get a sound card
cooking.
