Basically variations on "The Desktop" and "The Trashcan" like "The Shelf", 
"The Tray" and "The Archive"?

Would indeed make the desktop more lively :-)

Apart from the already existing drag&drop facilities, how would you propose 
to access such locations from the "open document" and "save document as" file 
dialogs?
