Yup, this is essentially what I did (trial and error).  Altho I think kdoc
only depends on one version of docbook.

Think so, I think the ports can handle this tho.

FWIW:

GNU Make version 3.78.1, by Richard Stallman and Roland McGrath.
Built for i386--freebsd4.0

works for me (5-current).  Have you tried:

gmake -f admin/Makefile.common dist

and then using pmake (standardbsdmakeinnotsolayman'sterme)?
