I recently found  that the taskbar the menubar with File Desktop... can be 
removed w/o hacking the sources.

What I did was hacked ~/$HOME/.kde/share/config/kdeglobals 
and added a group {Menubar] with a sub entry of TopLevel=false
This will only work AFAIK if under [KDE] macMenu is also false.

I haven't tested this fully but it might work for you.
