I had this problem some time ago too but now it works well.
Don't know if this is the solution, but I can give you some hints:
 - Set email address in kcontrol (Personalization/email)
 - DON'T RUN KDE AS ROOT (your mails may be filtered out by some
   mail software)
 - Sendmail should be installed (don't know if it's required to be
   running)
I think the latter was the reason of my most problems I had with mailing.

BTW: I've sendmail in /usr/sbin too. It doesn't matter.
