The problem is mostly the different libstdc++ versions used everywhere -
the C++ ABI on systems using gcc has changed several times over the last
couple of months (egcs 1.* != (gcc <= 2.8.*) != gcc 2.95.* != (cc >=
2.96)) (this was necessary to finally get templates to work well, but it's
a pain nevertheless).
Basically, binaries for egcs 1.*, gcc 2.95.* and gcc 2.96.* are required
(anyone still using gcc <= 2.8*?).
Probably there are still people out there using glibc 2.0.* - another one
that might be needed...
glibc 2.2 can still run stuff compiled for 2.1, so it's not much of a
problem, just don't use glibc 2.2 for building the packages.
Oh, and of course there's libutempter vs. setuid konsole and /usr
vs. /opt/kde, and ...
