Well, til last week you should have installed it into
$kde_datadir/myapp/pics, but now you should
name them like the artists would and put a

myicondir = $(kde_datadir)/myapp/pics 
myicon_ICON = mytoolbar

into Makefile.am when the icon name is lo16-toolbar-mytoolbar.png
