I don't know if I did understand you well, but if you'll look at Windows (at least on Windows 98 which is running here on my VMWare), you'll see that there are 2 types of wait cursor. One for "you can't do anything right now" which is the sandglass only, and the other one is "There is something done in the background, you can continue working" cursor which is sandglass & a mouse pointer, so you can continue work.. I don't remember how its done in mac, but if you want - I can install here the ARDI emulator (emulate Mac) and tell you how its done there..
