This thing you propose is interesting and this is why I forward it to the
list. There should be some way to monitor specific TCP ports of a linux
box for traffic and make a program obey the state of these ports. I don't
remember to have seen anything like this in any operating system, anyway.

This is also simple to do. Just make sure you periodically check for
proper link with the server of the resource and close the process when
connection dissapears.

Problem with your two requests is that networking in Unix is transient.
I.e. once a resource is served, transaction is closed. I think. This is no
windows, where a connection is faked open until some expiry timeout.

Anyways, as you see, I don't have a clear answer. Please, let this
