Strange problem indeed...
Don't you get a core dump (use ulimit -c unlimited if not) ?
When you get it, 'gdb myprog core' and 'bt'. 
That will be more helpful than assembly :-)


From the info you've given, I can't see where the problem is...
Would bits be a reserved words ?
