Mmmmmh. Doesn't sound good. There are two reasons for that:

a.) missing session managment in KDE _and_ kppp

b.) I had to take out the X error handlers (as advised my Matthias). 
I can't check right now but I suppose these handlers dealt with the X 
shutdown.
