This is what KURL does.  It does not care about any specific protocols as long
as they adhere to the form defined by standards - RFC 1738 currently and RFC
2396 sometime soon.

Where you get in trouble is when you try to access the resource defined by this
new protocol.  Then you would have to use KIOJob and it would come back and
tell you "unsupported protocol".  So all one has to do to add new protocols is
to simply design the io-slaves to deal with this specific service and provide a
.desktop file about the protocol that goes into the $KDEDIR/share/config/protocols.
After that you can use this user-defined protocol just like you do http, ftp,
etc...
