I would shy away from "#", this is a common IRC-ism used in window
titles, it would make things more confusing I think.  I would go for:
[*], [+], [!], .... we definitely stay away from ~, @, #, $, %, ^, & as
they hold different connotations (or just don't make sense, like ^ ). 
Imagine the perl programmer having his window title say $foobar. :-)
