Hi,

Would it be possible for the person/script who packages the current CVS
snapshots to leave the CVS directories in these tarballs?

This way you can setup(/update) your CVS very quickly from a snapshot mirror
all you have to do it unpack the archive and change all the CVS/Root entries
to contain your user name. (The samba people do this)

I'm happy to write a shell/perl script to do this and write something for the 
developer mini HOWTO.
