  Wrong - you just can't make a font with more than 256 glyphs.
You can certainly make unicode fonts that fit within iso8859-1,
for instance. In any case Qt translates from unicode to, say,
koi-8 or other encodings which will fit within 256 glyphs.

  You've forgotten Truetype fonts (supported with xfsft and in
XFree 3.9). These, of course, are fully  unicode-capable.
