I resolved this by changing line 1732 of admin/acinclude.m4.in from

AC_PROG_LIBTOOL dnl for libraries

to

AM_PROG_LIBTOOL dnl for libraries

Note the AC -> AM !!!
Should work for you too, or am I wrong coolo?

Something totally different:
I've tried to patch kdeutils/kwrite (via CVS, of course) but there was
a "sticky date" problem. I'm clueless - can someone please help me?
