Please don't waste your time! The new kpanel has already an
automatic menu update feature. The menu is update even if
something changes while the menu is open!

There is a dirwatch method that checks for directory updates
every xxx seconds.

Such feature is documented (along with the other new features) in 
kpanel/README.kpanel2
