Ok, thanks for that info. 

The transparent effect in Eterm works but not on 'screen One'. I have kde set
up with six screens (with different backgrounds), and Eterm will start up (I
have it with the '-O' option on my menu.) in all five other screens with a
transparent background. At first I thought it might have been just a
particular jpeg it didn't like, but I can't get the effect in kde's first
screen with any of the images I've tried.
