Matthias is rather busy, so I'm the official maintainer for kpanel.

I have been busy too for some weeks too, but I'll start coding again soon.

About using kded from kpanel: this seems a major issue and I haven't tested
kded yet, so I don't have an opinion. 

However, since the patch to use kded is really simple, we can try and --if
memory consumption is too bad-- discard the patch.
The real problem is to somehow reduce the size of the corba stuff, so that
it could be used anywhere it is needed without discussing about the impact
on memory requirements.
