I see. Does this mean that that the app must copy all pixels in the  
region to an ImageMagick data-structure before applying an effect? That
doesn't sound optimal to me.

Memory usage is an important issue with image manipulation. The Gimp gets
very slow even with moderately sized images (like 2000x2000 pixels),
where PhotoShop does effects like Gaussian blur almost realtime on such a
picture. And it's not because the system runs out of real memory.

BTW: What about SMP support?
