For a Red Hat "information" site they write quite a bit about KDE, probably even
slightly more than MSN reports about Linux . So we all should be graceful ;-)

Seriously, the slashdotters are webmasters, not programmers. When they saw the
style/theme support, they probably thought: "What's that? That looks like
everybody can draw it with the gimp in 5 minutes! They've probably stolen
it from GTK. Where's the clue?" Exactly, where's the clue, I mean, they don't
have one. There's much more to reasonable styling then simply placing pixmaps
everywhere, it's also about dynamic and usability ( example: a button is
something animated - you can push it in -, not just a static picture. ).

A mascot on the other hand is something they understand. It's also simply a
matter of taste. So everybody - may he be clueless or not - can comment on that
and _will_ comment on that. Whereas with the styles only two postings are
possible: "Looks great" and "Shit, now GTK isn't any longer the only toolkit
X11 toolkit that supports things liks that". No big deal.

So from a journalistic point of view, they are doing the right thing. Pretty
crappy style of journalism, but at least they serve their clients and
paying customers.

I still agree that they linux community somehow needs a vendor independent
discussion site. Unfortunately, linuxtody.com isn't used much for discussion,
maybe because the pure amount of information is too big.
