One might argue that it has a negative effect on security. There are
other login screens out there that completely hide the password. Knowing
the length of someones password makes cracking it a LOT easier.

Let's consider the way Lotus Notes does it: Near the LineEdit there is an
icon that changes with every keystroke. The user gets the feedback, that
his keystroke is really done, but there is no way to see in one glance,
how many charakters the password is made of.
