So maybe I am not too late to say something about the config thing:
IMO it's MUCH better to write only comments with the default values to the
config files because then you don't have to bother with changing defaults and
so on. The user will see it and only remove the comment if he wants to fix it
to a special value.
PS: Don't hit me if this was said before. I have problems fetching the mail. ;-/
