How is it determined which applications go into Utility, Application,
Multimedia, etc? What would be really nice is a system where it's clear
where all KDE applications go. That way, a user would drag a file onto
the K-Button and it would automatically be placed in the right area.
Then, an optional message box could pop up informing the user where the
program was added. For those applications that aren't KDE apps, it could
pop up a set of dialog boxes (as suggested above) that allow the user to
choose where they go. Alternatively, KDE could keep a database of non-KDE
applications, with information on what kind of application each is. This
would sort of be like what happens when kdebase is installed and it
searches for various non-KDE applications like emacs. So, if someone
drags emacs onto the K-Button, it gets placed in Utilities (or possibly
non-KDE->Utilities). This approach would require the least amount of work
from the user, and as long as the user is informed where the application
has been placed in the K start menu, then the user will be able to find
it. Marketing would refer to this as a delightful experience for the user
:-)
