Wow, thanks for all of the quick responses.  I tried everything that everyone
suggested. The suggestion that did exactly what I wanted was quick simple. I
just set:

setMouseTracking(true)

now whenever I have the mouse in the window, the mouseMove event gets called
even if the mouse button is not pressed. Pretty simple fix, but the function was
hard to find in the extensive list of methods associated with a qwidget.
