There is a plug-in for gimp (called gfig, I believe) that handles vector
drawing similar xfig.  I used it only briefly a few months ago but it
seemed very powerful but very easy to use.

There is a perl script called MSWordView
(http://www.csn.ul.ie/~caolan/docs/MSWordView.html) that converts files
from MSWord97 to HTML.  I wonder how hard it would be to adapt this
script to convert it to other formats?
