Afaik nothing has already replaced anything, Kubuntu is probably
the first to use it as a default install, but it's likely others will follow.

The big advantage of the new one vs the old one was that the new
code got many people looking at it and fixing bugs that used
to crash the old applet, I helped to fix the lib so that dangling
pointers stop crashing it, fedora's folks added the missing configuration
API...

Code speaking I see it as a big improvement, now for less information
and less control I don't see as a bad thing since to me the right
place for more control would be in System Settings which I started
to write (kcm_network) but right now I'm not sure I'll finish that code
(Qt5/QML and some other thoughts/plans that I have in mind).

I don't think you should take it as a dumb down, it's a completely
new code/approach, and if one wants I'd say it's now easier to
come with a new UI or even keep the "old" one around for a while
longer.
