Hi,
KDE currently provides a keyboard layout indicator, by default it's hidden if
you only have one layout, which is in the tray.
Following is not be related to KDE, but since I'm a input method developer,
and the maintainer of kimpanel in kdeplasma-addons , and what you want to do
it something technically related to input method, I'd like to provide some
technical details and if I'd like invite you to join my project if you want.
Especically for 2), only input method and program itself know the position
text input cursor. and input method is the application who can grab all the
application keyboard input easily, you don't need to touch any /dev file.
Since you cannot patch the program, so if you really want to display something
there, you must develop something inside input method.
So following is a little bit advertisement, but I think it's something similar
to your idea.
I have a video demostration here for what I've implemented here. It's also
keyboard layout related but with work completion feature.
