It is possible. I think the current problem is that global shortcuts does not 
allow alternative bindings. Also in 3.x XF86Sleep was tied to Lock Screen. For 
desktop computers with a unix keyboard with a sleep button, I personally feel 
the default should still be to lock screen, the hibernate function is for 
laptops, and should work using ACPI. You should try to find out what happens 
to the key in ACPI and report as a distro or kernel bug.
