Indeed I get a "locking screen" popup announcement before the sleep occurs on
my Kubuntu laptop. Although I'm not sure if that's stock KDE behavior or
Kubuntu modifications.

I get that too on debian, the screen locks *before* suspend or hibernate, and I don't see the screen contents when resuming (I always have compositing enabled with kwin, using intel and radeon xorg  drivers)
