Hi Harald,

Sorry to jump in late on this thread.

I'd suggest the following approach to resolve this issue:

1) Determine the default PATH set for the users [1].
2) Ensure the NFS mounts in `/etc/fstab' have timely timeouts set
   [2].

During login, some shells need to process all of PATH.  If PATH is
pointing to dead and/or many NFS directories with _untimely_ timeouts,
this may result in slow logins.

For more information, see the `man' page for the users' shell.  For
example, `bash' reads `/etc/profile' along with `personal
initialization files.'

It's important to set timely timeouts for NFS mounts.  `man nfs'
provides the details however some options to consider in `/etc/fstab'
for the NFS-mounts are:

o `soft', `timeo', `retrans', `bg', `retry'

The `man' page offers a rich write up.
