Close. It was actually:

notifier = Solid.Networking.notifier()
QObject.connect(notifier, SIGNAL("statusChanged()"), self.netstate_changed)

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :-)

Now I'm excited too see if the signal actually gets emitted ;-)
