It's certainly a funny bug.  I've been using KMail for ~8 years, and I've met 
the bug twice - once recently and once several years ago - and both times 
everything remained stable after I restored the templates.  Neither time 
followed any action on my part to change a setting.  IOW - it just happened!  
and I've no idea why.
