It's probably not much slower, unless you're talking about a huge
number of entries with few changes. Trouble with that approach is that
you lose selection.

I have a similar with the System Activity program - I have to compare
the new list of processes against the old list and work out which have
been added, removed and moved.  This was a big reason why it took so
long to get right.
