You're missing the point then.

If it's memory mapped files, then the memory that is occupied can be easily 
freed when needed, very quickly. It's already in a file. It's just like the 
buffers/cache, except it's done at user level, not kernel.

If it's heap, then the memory cannot be made free unless it's swapped out.
