Well as I just switched from Kubuntu to Debian, I think I can help by namin= g=20 the most important reasons why I switched: 1. Translations: nothing to add - if you get rid of Rosetta I'm confident t= hat=20 there will be a good translated 10.04 release. Although it improved in Karm= ic=20 it's nothing I would install on my parents' computer. 2. Shipping unfinished software: sebas said everything which has to be=20 mentioned ;-) 3. Patching: it's really difficult to find the patches Kubuntu applies. I t= ried=20 to look for all patches to kwin and it was painfull (I found one patch and = it=20 got removed). While bazaar might be nice for you because of the launchpad=20 integration it's definately not helping in getting more developers. That se= ems=20 to me like a general problem with the Ubuntu landscape (compare Rosetta). There are also some changes in the default settings which are difficult to= =20 track. Here I would ask: why change the default? If KDE's default is=20 improvable contact your upstream. In any case if you have a patch or a chan= ge=20 to the default settings: just contact the responsible KDE team. In best cas= e=20 they will accept the patch, in worst case they will tell you why it is a ba= d=20 idea. 4. Ayatana: I really, really dislike the changes done to Kubuntu Karmic due= to=20 Ayatana. It is sad that it is completely developed ignoring the community a= nd=20 it is sad that developer power is wasted by developing a system which is no= t=20 upstreamable and that is known to the developer of the system. The way how= =20 Canonical tried to push their changes upstream were suboptimal. To me it=20 looked like Canonical thought that if they send in patch after patch it wil= l=20 be accepted. So here I see potential to improve the communication, but that= 's=20 more Canonical than Kubuntu. And that brings us back to patching. Many=20 applications have been patched to support yet another messaging system aka= =20 MessageIndicator. Review requests like "This patch has been in use during=20 Kubuntu Karmic development and is now deployed with Kubuntu Karmic version"= =20 illustrate the problem. What's the advantage of having a review, if it is=20 already out in the wild?=20 5. Support: Kubuntu promises 18 month of support, but the repositories do n= ot=20 contain updates. KDE 4.2.4 for jaunty is only available in the backports=20 repository. I do not consider a bugfix release as a backport. For intrepid = KDE=20 4.2 was added to backports but it stopped at 4.2.2. If Kubuntu does not hav= e=20 the manpower to maintain that many releases, do not provide 18 months of=20 support or activate your ppas by default. That is quite important as 10.04= =20 will be an LTS release. I think you help more users if you are honest and s= ay=20 we can't provide three years of support instead of having disappointed user= s=20 because there bugs don't get fixed although the fix is available in upstrea= m=20 KDE. That said I wish you good luck for your project and I hope you can get Kubu= ntu=20 on the track again.=20 --nextPart2527245.mrcvk3nLcZ Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name=signature.asc Content-Description: This is a digitally signed message part. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) iJwEAAECAAYFAkrxvn4ACgkQ/umpWjNT6CJz+QP6A5SLtG6/R88Ik2vrwIZCWlBM CzRTgchgTzYcQ5G33zfKqRtpF+bM/Yzo9ds5d04+lQysxHpa/I3RntL0627fu2P4 eJvEQYTlECfRaVPt0Bi/zv8F7nn76A0byHO9JahJUe3kZBWHtA5ePUn50jXooGZH MSun4AoXCgLGYQRxwnw= =uMQw -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --nextPart2527245.mrcvk3nLcZ-- --===============0467469786== Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline >> Visit http://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kde-devel#unsub to unsubscribe << --===============0467469786==--
