Cool, It's good to hear a lot if this stuff is there already or close to 
there.  I haven't looked at sane or libksane for so long, or even really 
scanned anything, I'm struggling to remember how it all works, let alone know 
how best to architect the split between library and application.  I'll leave 
that to the expert :-)  

But generally let's leave all the image manipulation to the apps that 
specialise in it, although an auto-levels does seem a useful thing to have if 
I just need to quickly scan something to e-mail and don't want to fire up a 
separate image editor for that.

Well, my thought would be the batch list would show a list of selected areas, 
and if you click on an item in the list that area gets highlighted in the 
preview area and the settings widgets all adjust to what was previously 
selected for that area.  The batch list itself could have a small preview of 
the selected area and some of the key settings listed next to the preview, the 
current XSane batch list looks a bit like that.  XSane also lets you name the 
selected areas and save/reload the batch list, I guess for scanning standard 
forms or something?
