KMid and VMPK features don't overlap too much. KMid is a MIDI and Karaoke 
files player. VMPK can't play MIDI files by itself. It is a virtual keyboard, 
an emulator of a MIDI musical instrument implemented in software only, using 
the mouse and the computer keyboard to generate MIDI events. VMPK is 
Qt4-based (not KDE-based) application, GPLv3 licensed.

The only overlapping is related to the "Pianola" function. KMid can be used as 
a standalone player piano device, to watch the pressed piano keys while the 
song is being played. To use VMPK as a Pianola in Linux, you need to connect 
it to some ALSA sequencer based MIDI file player. For instance, playing a 
song with Rosegarden or Muse or MuseScore, connected to the input of VMPK.
