That is exactly your issue. There may be ways of getting what you want
using KToolbar and certain signals, but using the XMLGUI platform will
give you this and a whole lot of other features pretty much for free.
Most small applications (like, say, kdegames) should give you a decent
example of how XMLGUI works.
