This is a nice way to create additional custom menu's but folderview
has one annoying thing (the same is in Dolphin actually) - I don't
know if it's a bug or if it was done on purpose (which is why I'm
mailing before posting something) - but it doesn't handle .desktop
files nicely - it shows the filename rather than the description.
The old KDE3 quickbrowser applet handled this really nicely - but
since folderview does everything else it does already, it seems
superfluous to have to install another plasmoid just for that (e.g.
I'm aware that a KDE4 clone exists) - especially since the
quickbrowser applet actually does too much for this and folderview is
in every other aspect better.

Even on the desktop I think showing the description/Name entry from
the .desktop file rather than the filename makes sense. After all if
you have a folderview of your Desktop folder, it is likely full of
shortcuts from various apps - and the filename isn't the part you are
actually interested in - it's the program name you want to see.
