the Phonon bit is backwards; Phonon uses whatever is on the system, it's not a 
media system itself ala ALSA or Pulse. Phonon does use Quicktime on Mac, but I 
don't know (doubt, actually) that that gives us access to the system mixer on 
MacOS.

one of the Mac heads could probably weigh in authoritatively, of course.
