I have now fixed all the problems with Xorg7.4 but I still cannot login in
via kdm. (just to recap the machine is an AMD64 linux box with
kde-4.2.1.   kernel-2.6.28.10,  gcc-4.3.2,  and  Xorg-7.4

a) I can start kde via the startx/startkde command from the command line for
normal user and root
a) and xdm works -I can login via xdm
c) but I cannot login with kdm.

the snippet below shows a tail of the file /var/log/auth.log

---------------------
[ /etc/pam.d ]# tail  /var/log/auth.log
May 18 10:01:14 clfsX6408b login[2137]: ROOT LOGIN  on 'tty1'
May 18 10:03:48 clfsX6408b kdm: :0[2176]: pam_warn(kde:auth):
function=[pam_sm_authenticate] service=[kde] terminal=[:0] user=[forker]
ruser=[<unknown>] rhost=[<unknown>]
May 18 10:25:24 clfsX6408b login[2120]: pam_unix(login:session): session
opened for user root by LOGIN(uid=0)
May 18 10:25:24 clfsX6408b login[2138]: ROOT LOGIN  on 'tty1'
May 18 10:56:56 clfsX6408b login[2120]: pam_unix(login:session): session
closed for user root
May 18 10:57:03 clfsX6408b login[2213]: pam_unix(login:session): session
opened for user root by LOGIN(uid=0)
May 18 10:57:03 clfsX6408b login[2214]: ROOT LOGIN  on 'tty1'
May 18 11:07:15 clfsX6408b login[2120]: pam_unix(login:session): session
opened for user root by LOGIN(uid=0)
May 18 11:07:15 clfsX6408b login[2137]: ROOT LOGIN  on 'tty1'
May 18 11:07:40 clfsX6408b kdm: :0[2160]: pam_warn(kde:auth):
function=[pam_sm_authenticate] service=[kde] terminal=[:0] user=[tester]
ruser=[<unknown>] rhost=[<unknown>]
[ /etc/pam.d ]#

Note in the above snippet the arguments [ruser=<unknown>] and
[rhost=<unknown>].  I tried to  modify /opt/kde4/share/config/kdm(Xaccess
and Kdmrc) to disable xdmcp and set host as localhost only, but it made
no difference. Below are the entries I use for /etc/pam.d/xdm
and /etc/pam.d/kdm

--------------
[ /etc/pam.d ]# cat xdm
#%PAM-1.0
auth     include        system-auth
account  include        common-account
password include        common-password
session  required       pam_loginuid.so
session  include        common-session
#session  required       pam_resmgr.so

[ /etc/pam.d ]# cat kdm
#%PAM-1.0
auth       include     system-auth
#account    required    pam_nologin.so
account    include     system-auth
password   include     system-auth
#session    optional    pam_keyinit.so force revoke
session    include     system-auth
#session    required    pam_loginuid.so
session    optional    pam_console.so
--------------------

Below is to a tail of the logfile /var/log/kdm.log

----------------

[ /etc/pam.d ]# tail /var/log/kdm.log

I checked my Xorg configuration and logs and there are no errors.
