 I assume this is with compositing enabled. KWin currently does not have any 
code to paint the root window, it requires a _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP 
desktop window for proper painting. You can either modify paintBackground() 
functions in KWin source, or create a simple window instead of Plasma.
