Hmm - sorry for wasting your time.  All this intelligent processing is too 
much for me :-)  Extract (in various configurations) is offered when I point 
it to a suitable file, a tar.gz, for instance.

I sometimes think these magazine articles do more harm than good.  There are 
few dubious statements such as this, but the only thing you can do is write in 
to the Letters section, and by the time that appears the damage is already 
done :-(
