KDE4 depends on the shared-mime-info package (basically MIME info shared
between free software desktops) which is installed into /usr/share which in
turn is one of the defaults of XDG_DATA_DIRS if the variable is unset.
Short of adding at least /usr/share to the XDG_DATA_DIRS as well, you could
install its source package into the same prefix you are using for your KDE
trunk installation.
