which model of intel graphics card?
i have a x3100/GM965 on my laptop, also running kde 4.1 on opensuse
11.0, and i see similar graphical corruption, but my system doesn't
hardlock.

Do you have kwin effects enabled?
could you also post your xorg.conf please. ( you will find it at
/etc/X11/xorg.conf )
