this breakage is due to changes in the event handling model in QGraphicsView 
in Qt 4.4.

the real solution is to remove the handles hack (where we create a second 
graphics item, reparent the applet to it, etc..) completely and start using 
the window decorations support.

getting to that before 4.1.0 is a bit of a priority.
