It's logical on en_US where + is shift-= (most people forget to hit shift). Not sure if we have a way to have locale-specific shortcuts. Probably it would be easiest to make sure ctrl-+ is a alternate shortcut at least.

That has always cleared it since KDE 3 in my experience. Alt-O will switch without clearing, and works in KDE 4.
