NEPOMUK brings together researchers, industrial software developers, and representative industrial users, to develop a comprehensive solution for extending the personal desktop into a collaboration environment that supports both personal information management and sharing and exchange across social and organisational relations. The NEPOMUK Summer School will represent a very good opportunity for postgraduates students to refine their knowledge in a variety of topics such as Semantic Web, Personal Information Management, P2P, HCI, or Social Networking, all in the context of the Social Semantic Desktop. It will consist of a range of theoretical and practical sessions taught by leading researchers in the field and combined with a series of mini-projects to encourage collaboration between the participants. In order to provide high-quality results, the number of accepted participants will be limited to 35. They will have to bring their own computers and will be supported with the proper set-up for the practical sessions. All participants will be provided with a copy of the teaching material. In addition to the taught and practical sessions, the participants will also benefit from and enjoy a stimulating environment through social interactions with the lecturers, tutors, and other participants. Main requirement: Applicants should be PhD students, postdocs, or young researchers acting in relevant disciplines for the field. All participants are expected to arrive on Malta on September 7th and to be willing to fully commit themselves to the Summer School's activities until around noon September 13th. Applications that do not fulfil these requirements, will not be considered. Accepted participants will be advised on the registration process. ACCOMMODATION, TRAVEL, AND LOCAL INFORMATION The Victoria Hotel in Sliema will act both as a venue for the Summer School and accommodation place for all the participants and lecturers. It provides a range of facilities which will make your stay more pleasant, including a swimming pool and fine dining. In terms of location, Sliema is one of the best places in Malta. It represents a centre for shopping, restaurants and cafes, close Paceville, the night-life centre of Malta, and to the capital Valletta. Regarding transportation, there are two main options of travelling to Malta: by boat from Sicily (Italy) or flying to Luqa, the main airport in Malta. We would advise the participants to follow the second option. The Luqa Airport is very well connected. We will provide local transportation from the airport to the venue. The travelling time between the airport and the venue is around 30 min. COST AND APPLICATION The cost of the Summer School is 700 Euro per participant. It includes accommodation for the entire period, three meals per day, coffee breaks, the teaching material and the social event. The application form can be found on the Summer School website. GRANTS A small number of grants will be available for PhD students pursuing their research in the field and who are else unable to afford participating in the Summer School. A grant will cover registration fees. To apply for a grant, the students will have to contact the organisers at summerschoolorganisation@nepomuk.semanticdesktop.org and provide a letter signed by their institution, confirming their status as students and the fact that it cannot contribute to their participation in the Summer School. The letter has to be scanned and emailed to the organisers, and in the case in which the grant is provided, the original letter has to be handed in at arrival time.
